Treasure chests lie scattered throughout the dungeons. Some of
them hide artifacts or other objects that may be necessary to you
on your quest. In addition to scattering and hiding their valuables
behind traps and puzzles, many chests are booby-trapped to prevent
unwanted intrusion. When you encounter a chest, you can ignore it
and return to it later, or try one of three options to open
it:
|
- Open - Attempt to open the chest by force. If you are
lucky, the chest will not be booby-trapped, and you will be able
to open it without being harmed.
- Pick Lock - Lock
picking is the earliest skill learned by a thief, and because it
is a skill, it does not require the use of spell points. If you
have a thief in your party, use this menu option, then select a
thief character from your party to pick the lock. The thief's
likelihood of successfully picking a lock without setting off a
trap increases as they gain levels:

- Trap Zap - Higher
level thieves learn a more effective spell based method for
disarming traps. The trap zap spell actually destroys traps
inside chests, disarms any harmful agents in the chest, and
breaks the chest's lock. If you have a thief in your party
capable of casting the trap zap spell, select this menu option,
then select the thief who you wish to cast the spell. The trap
zap spell has a fixed chance of safely disarming any trap of 80%.
Trapzap is still not foolproof, but for most thieves, it's a
safer bet than the pick lock skill.
